Koninklijke FrieslandCampina N.V. and BPD have reached agreement about the sale of the former Coberco site in Arnhem. This is the first step towards the development of a new urban hotspot along the Rijnkade in Arnhem, whereby the characteristic historic buildings are maintained.
The urban developers of BPD have taken on the challenge to develop a new urban area at the site of the former dairy factory Coberco, where living and working are combined and of which the historic significance is retained. Moreover, there must be room for diversity and recreation in the new urban district. The Municipal Executive of Arnhem drew up an ambitious document for the redevelopment, including starting points, frameworks, ambitions and preconditions. The plan of area developer BPD came on top during the selection. The characteristic historic factory buildings of Coberco will become the multifunctional heart of the district in this plan, which will be called the ‘De Melkfabriek’ ‘(Milk Factory).
Immediately adjacent to the town centre, along the Rijn, a new, sustainable and nearly car-free urban district will be built. The new urban hotspot of Arnhem will not only have beautiful squares, but also a varied range of about 280 town houses and apartments. In the old multifunctional factory halls there is much room for a food market, catering services, art and cultural events, entrepreneurs and a town brewery. ‘De Melkfabriek’ is flexible and therefore suitable for all kinds of initiatives and ready for the future.
About the Coberco site
After FrieslandCampina had sold the former Coberco site to a development and building combination in 2000, it became the owner again of its former production location in 2015, because the development of the area had not taken place. The development opportunities for this special location were examined in close cooperation with the municipality of Arnhem. At the end of June 2016 the Coberco site was put up for sale again by FrieslandCampina. In total 15 parties showed a serious interest.
FrieslandCampina was advised by 3stone Real Estate and De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek N.V. for the sales transaction.
